A cause for celebration!

Businesses in the SODO district (south of downtown in the west 300 block on Second Avenue) are celebrating the end of street construction. Business is back in full swing for Finders Keepers, Anemone Paper Flowers, Serendipity, Lolo, Eclectic Gifts and other merchants on Second Avenue who have struggled with massive street construction that left them no parking and very few customers for months. So go by this week and celebrate with them.

RPS garage work begins

Downtown shoppers will notice improvements underway at River Park Square's parking garage this week. Work has begun to resurface the 10-story garage that is part of Spokane's downtown shopping center. The garage will remain open during improvements and signage will guide guests directionally in affected areas.

Get in line. Trader Joes to open October 28

And speaking of shopping. Trader Joes plans to open their new Spokane store in Lincoln Heights on Friday, October 28. With over 16,000 facebook fans, and thousands more anxiously awaiting the arrival of this popular store, I would assume there will be people camping out to be one of the first inside.

Cheney food blogger selected to cook with Emeril

Cheney resident Heather Scholten, creator of the Farmgirl Gourmet blog, has been selected by William Morrow Cookbooks to participate in their 'One-Pot Blogger Cooking Party' to celebrate the release of Emeril Lagasse's latest cookbook. Scholten and nineteen other bloggers will receive advance copies of Emeril Lagasse's upcoming cookbook, Sizzling Skillets and other One Other One-Pot Wonders, (on sale 9/27), and will prepare at least three meals a week for three weeks using recipes from the book. They will also blog about their experiences.

But it's not all work, remember it's a party. Blogger participants will receive cookware and gourmet food products from Chef Emeril Lagasse that will aid them in the creation of their meals. The top performing culinary blogger, as selected by Lagasse's cookware partner T-Fal, will be awarded an Emeril by T-Fal Slow Cooker, at the conclusion of the three-week blogging party.

Morrow's cookbook blog, The Secret Ingredient (thesecretingredientblog.com), will showcase the bloggers' featured posts and will provide Facebook and Twitter updates about the challenge as it progresses. Emeril's test kitchen's culinary team will also highlight their favorite posts on the emerils.com Cooking Blog during the three-week period.

You can follow Scholten's progress at www.farmgirlgourmet.com.

Big Art on the Little Spokane

Don't let the name fool you: The Little Spokane River Artist Studio Tour is no small event. Professional artists travel from across the Northwest to show and sell their work on the Tour, and the Little Spokane River Valley boasts more than its own share of artistic wealth. The 3 hosting studios are the homes of well know artists Gina Freuen, Hulda Bridgeman and Jill Smith. They open their studio spaces to the public for the Tour, to sell their creations and allow a glimpse into the creative life of working artists. This year they are joined by 22 invited artists for a spectacular art-day in the beautiful Little Spokane River Valley.

The Little Spokane River Artist Studio Tour begins at 10am on Saturday, September 24th, and ends at 5pm. More information and maps at www.littlespokanestudios.com.

River Park Square Welcomes Vivo Clothing Store

River Park Square, downtown Spokane's shopping center, announces Vivo clothing store will open November 1st, 2011. Vivo offers a merchandise mix that will appeal to a female audience ranging from teens to mid-thirties. The new store will be located on the third floor next to Claire's.

Locally owned by Dale and Shawnda Rainey of Post Falls, this will be the store's fourth area location since 2009. Currently, Vivo has 22 employees and will be expanding their staff with the opening. Dale is CEO of an international commodities trading company and a business coach at the Idaho Small Business Development Center. Shawnda has been self-employed for 14 years in the retail industry and has founded three companies.

"It's exciting because this space has never been occupied by a permanent tenant," said Bryn West, general manager of River Park Square. "This shows Vivo is not only a popular destination retailer but that our urban core is growing with a mix of stores."

Vivo's opening marks the eighth new tenant announcement by River Park Square in the past year. For more information on the clothing store, visit: www.vivohome.com. Interviews are available upon request.

Coug Fan Rich Harkins on a mission

As a parent of a WSU Freshman and a very big Coug Fan, Rich Harkins of Fidelity Associates has put an entry in to the ESPN Gameday Mascot Head Challenge. He has quickly surged into the lead nationally. The competition requires votes through a Facebook Application at the following link: apps.facebook.com/cgdcorsomascots/s/i/30911.

The picture is of Rich, when he was activated from the Air National Guard to go to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba several years ago. He is pictured on a Coast Guard Patrol Boat on the Guantanamo River.

In addition to the recognition this brings to WSU, the winner will also receive an exact replica Butch T. Cougar mascot head. Rich hopes to win it for his daughter and work with the University to present it to her at a Cougar basketball game this season.
