River Park Square Brings Back Nationally-Acclaimed Fashion's Night Out

Modeled after New York City's annual event and often labeled the 'Best Fashion Show in History', River Park Square is bringing Fashion's Night Out back to Spokane this Thursday, September 6 from 5 pm to 9 pm. The global initiative was created in 2009 as a way to celebrate fall fashion, restore consumer confidence and boost the economy.

Today, Fashion's Night Out is celebrated in more than 100 cities and 16 countries. With a commitment to support and promote downtown community involvement under River Park Square's newly created Urban Link initiative, the public is encouraged to drop off new or gently used makeup and beauty products for Project Beauty Share, or clothes for Our Sister's Closet, at the event. Donations can be dropped off at the Concierge Desk.

River Park Square is teaming with Ryan Oelrich, owner of Air Art, who has designed ten creative balloon dresses in honor of Fashion's Night Out. Oelrich is an award-winning balloon artist who earned a world record for 'Longest Time Spent Living in a Balloon House', when he constructed a home out of over 7,000 balloons and lived in it for 168 hours as a benefit for Habitat of Humanity. Oelrich's unique dresses will come to life on September 6 in the Nordstrom corridor. For a preview of his other work, visit: airsculpting.com/sculptures.html.

Steve Utt leaves RiverBank

Steve Utt, who was one of the co-founders of Spokane-based RiverBank, has resigned from the company. RiverBank CEO Chuck Brooks said Utt resigned as executive vice president and chief credit officer. Brooks did not elaborate on Utt's reason for departing. He said Utt did not sign a non-compete clause, leaving him able to work for another bank if he chose.

Utt helped found the commercial bank in 2006 with Duane Brandenburg. Its downtown offices are at 202 E. Spokane Falls Blvd. Utt began his 25-year banking career at Farmers & Merchants Bank, and also worked at AmericanWest Bank.

The company will appoint John W. Roewe as senior vice president and chief credit officer, subject to approval by regulators. He has been with the bank as its credit administrator. RiverBank has undergone several management shake-up and business reforms after federal regulators insisted the bank raise capital and undertake 'safe and sound' banking practices.

Why so many zippers say 'YKK'

The YKK stands for Yoshida Kogyo Kabushikikaisha (say that five times fast!). In 1934, Tadao Yoshida founded Yoshida Kogyo Kabushikikaisha (translated Yoshida Industries Limited). This company is now the world's top zipper manufacturer, making 90% of all zippers in over 206 facilities in 52 countries. In fact, they not only make the zippers, they also make the machines that make the zippers; no word on if they make the machines that make the parts that make up the machines that make the zippers.
