Visit Polly Phelan if you visit Phoenix

After a decade at Visit Spokane, vice president of Business Development, Polly Phelan has taken a position with Visit Phoenix. Polly grew up in north Spokane and started at Visit Spokane in 2002 as the director of membership. She was promoted to vice president of Business Development in 2009.

Nationally, Polly is recognized as a leader in membership programming within Destination Marketing Organizations. She was instrumental in bringing the Certified Tourism Ambassador (CTA) Program to Spokane, now boasting nearly 1,000 trained CTAs in our region. Under Polly's direction, Visit Spokane's partnership grew by 10% and revenue increased by 80%. Most recently, she led the membership program as it was transformed into a partnership model while keeping the focus on visitors. Polly is past President of the Executive Women International (EWI) Spokane Chapter and she has served on the board of directors for the Spokane Restaurant Association.

Polly's last day at Visit Spokane will be November 9, but she will continue to work with the team to help train the individual selected to be the new Senior Director of Business Development. Polly's position is now posted on VisitSpokane.com.

Witherspoon Kelley attorneys appointed to federal bar

Three Witherspoon Kelley attorneys were recently appointed to the Board of the Federal Bar for the Eastern District of Washington. Tim Lawlor will serve as the 2012-2013 Federal Bar President; Geana Van Dessel with serve as its Vice-President; and Matt Daley will serve as its Treasurer. All three Witherspoon Kelley attorneys practice within the Firm's litigation group. Tim Lawlor has been with the Firm since 1993; Geana Van Dessel joined the Firm in 2006; and Matt Daley has been with the Firm since 2007.

The Federal Bar recently held its annual District Conference at The Davenport Hotel where over 200 lawyers from Spokane and surrounding areas attended the all-day event with judges from both the Eastern District of Washington and the Ninth Circuit.

Jim Brunner receives United Van Lines' Masters Club Award

Jim Brunner of Chipman Moving & Storage (Spokane), Inc. has achieved the United Van Lines' Masters Club Award. Chipman Moving & Storage (Spokane), Inc. is an agent of the worldwide household goods transportation company, United Van Lines.

United's Masters Club is a reward and recognition program for agency sales representatives for exceptional sales achievement during the past year in five business segment categories - corporate account household goods, residential household goods, special products (includes special commodities, trade shows, and electronics), international, and total revenue. This year, 150 eligible agency sales representatives qualified for the Masters Club.

INHS receives grant for childhood obesity prevention program

Inland Northwest Health Services (INHS) was awarded a grant of $931,815 to address obesity challenges in six eastern Washington counties over the next two years.

This grant is a part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' (HHS's) Community Transformation Grants (CTG) to support public health efforts to reduce chronic diseases, promote healthier lifestyles, reduce health disparities, and control health care spending in small communities.

The Ground Guys of Spokane Valley receive multiple awards

The Grounds Guys franchisees, Kenny and Paula Smith, were awarded five awards at The Dwyer Group's 31st Annual Reunion - more than any other franchisee for The Grounds Guys. The Dwyer Group Annual Reunion is an event all of the service-based franchise organizations attend. There are seven service concepts that make up The Dwyer Group - Aire Serve, Glass Doctor, Mr. Rooter, Mr. Electric, Mr. Appliance, Rainbow International and The Grounds Guys.

Kenny and Paula have been servicing the Lake Liberty, Spokane Valley and Spokane areas with lawn and landscape needs since 2007, when they founded Smith Valley Landscape Management. In 2011, Kenny and Paula decided to partner with The Grounds Guys to open The Grounds Guys of Spokane Valley in an effort to exceed customers' expectations.

The pair was given the highest honor a franchisee can receive - 'Franchise of the Year'. The award is presented to the franchisee who has consistently grown through proper training and management of their organization and has had a high level of sales through quality, professional service. In addition, they received 'Builder of the Year' which is presented to the franchisee who has provided franchise leads that have culminated in the greatest number of franchise sales. They were also named 'Recruiter of the Year', meaning they showed superior recruiting and training skills. Due to their positive and proactive impact on others, they received the 'Excellence in Mentoring' award. Paula also received the 'Woman of the Year' award, meaning she contributed more to her franchise than any other woman working at The Grounds Guys.

Michael Wilson Receives Prestigious Hospital Award

Michael Wilson received the prestigious Joe Hopkins Memorial Award from the Washington State Hospital Association during the organization's annual meeting earlier this month. The award is given to an individual who has displayed vision, leadership, and dedication to health care in Washington State.

Wilson is the Chief Executive of Providence Health Care - Eastern Washington Region. Over the course of his career, Wilson led re-organization efforts in three different health care institutions in Washington State. He was a pioneer in recognizing and promoting the importance of electronic medical records. Wilson is also a past WSHA chair and has served in many association committees over the last 25 years.

"Mike is a tremendous health care leader and a staunch advocate for Washington's most vulnerable individuals," said Scott Bond, president of the Washington State Hospital Association. "We are thrilled to recognize Michael's devotion to strengthening health care in Washington State."

The Joe Hopkins award is named after a former hospital association chair and hospital administrator who lost his battle with cancer in 1987. The award was created in honor of Hopkins's outstanding leadership and special qualities of warmth, persistence, insight, hardworking attitude, and humor. The award recognizes those who exhibit similar qualities in service to hospitals in Washington State.

The Washington State Hospital Association represents all of Washington's 97 community hospitals. The association takes a major leadership role in issues that affect delivery, quality, accessibility, affordability, and continuity of health care. It works to serve its members, increase access to health care, and improve health care quality.

Gonzaga MBA Information Meeting October 30

The next MBA Information session is scheduled for Tuesday, October 30. It will be held from 5:30 to 7pm at the Jepson Center at Gonzaga.

Come learn more about Gonzaga's top-ranked MBA program. The meeting will cover a broad range of topics including MBA curriculum, tuition and financial aid, and application procedures. Attendees will have the opportunity to hear about programs from school of business staff and faculty, as well as current students and alumni. There will also be time to answer individual questions. Total Wine & More opening in Spokane November 2

Total Wine & More will open its first store in Spokane on Friday, November 2, at 9980 North Newport Highway in the Northpointe Shopping Center. With 25,000 sq. ft. of space, Total Wine's new superstore will feature more than 8,000 wines, 3,000 spirits and 2,500 beers, including more than 1,450 Washington wines, 55 Washington and Oregon distilled spirits and 540 Pacific Northwest beers. The store will also include several iPad stations filled with tasting and pairing notes and flat screen televisions featuring programming on well-respected winemakers, distillers and brewers from around the world. Exchange Club hands out checks

Last Thursday's downtown Exchange Club was an early Christmas gift for several organizations. The club presented checks from the Exchange Club Foundation (over $34,000) to seven agencies who applied through the newly established grant process. Each agency had someone there to accept the checks (of varying amounts). Those agencies receiving checks were Vanessa Behan Crisis Nursery, SCAN - Support, Care and Networking, Children's Home Society of Washington, SPO-CAN, Transitions, YMCA and SMILE.
