Susan G. Komen's Pink Tie Guys are on a roll. Award winners will be announced and recognized at the Annual Gem of the Valley Awards Gala on Saturday, January 25, at the Mirabeau Park Hotel and Convention Center in Spokane Valley. The elegant event will feature a social hour, gourmet dinner, Grand Prize raffles, an awards program hosted by Skip Bonuccelli and John Guarisco, and a video presentation of award candidates.

Awards will also be presented to Educators of the Year from the school districts served by the Chamber. A highlight of the evening will be the presentation of the 2013 Harry E. Nelson Citizen of the Year Award to Max Spalding, owner of Spalding Auto Parts, who is known for his contributions to the community and his commitment to HUB Sports Center, where he serves on the Board of Directors.

Local creative ad leader launches freelance practice




Mickey Lonchar, most recently the Chief Creative Officer at Spokane ad agency Quisenberry, has launched a freelance practice offering Copywriting and Content for Advertising, Online and Social Media. He is targeting his services to both agencies and clients on a project basis.

Mickey is a creative veteran with two decades of experience with agencies in Seattle and San Francisco before landing at Quisenberry ten years ago. During his tenure as Chief Creative Officer, the agency earned a stellar creative reputation, winning a number of regional and national awards, including 97 Addy Awards (including National Gold and three Best of Shows) and 22 International Telly Awards.

Savorx Broadens Horizon with New Locations




Choice Rosauers and Huckleberry's stores will soon be spiced up through the incoming Savorx Spice and Flavor Co. expansion around January 20th. Savorx is a local spice company, currently selling rubs at Rocket Market, Kitchen Engine, and Main Market Co-op, and will soon have products in select Huckleberry's and Rosauers. After a successful Kickstarter in August, Savorx has been able to make and distribute 'Spiceologist Blocks'. These wooden blocks are handmade, holding corked tubes filled with a customer's personal selection of Savorx spices. While 'Spiceologist Blocks' are only currently available through their online store, Kitchen Engine hopes to sell these blocks by the end of January. Here a customer would have access to various Savorx spices to fill their test tubes as they choose. Ron van der Veen Joins NAC Architecture as Principal




Ron van der Veen has joined NAC Architecture as Principal Architect. He has provided design leadership for innovative, award-winning projects across the United States, with emphasis on higher education facilities, student housing and sustainability. Ron has 29 years of experience in architecture and is a LEED Accredited Professional. At NAC Architecture, he will lead higher education and student housing projects and provide specialized expertise throughout all NAC Architecture offices.

Ron is a founding board member for the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE), and was an active member of AASHE's development committee in the creation of the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment and Rating System (STARS) for College campuses. He has conducted presentations nationally on green design topics such as Biophilia, high performance buildings and sustainable master planning.

Ron earned his Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Oregon in 1981, before continuing his studies in Santiago de Compostela, Spain. Prior to joining NAC Architecture Ron was a principal at DLR Group and a partner at Mithun. He is also a regular columnist for ARCADE magazine, an artist and the drummer for a local Seattle rock band.

Integrus Architecture to design new U.S. Embassy is Mauritania

The United States Department of State Bureau of Overseas Buildings Operations (OBO) recently announced the design and construction award for the New U.S. Embassy in Nouakchott, Mauritania to Caddell Construction Company of Montgomery, Alabama and the architect of record, Integrus Architecture, of Spokane, Washington. Nouakchott, Mauritania is located on the west coast of Africa on the Atlantic Ocean.

This project will provide safe, secure, and modern facilities for embassy employees. The new complex will be situated on a 10.5-acre site in the Tevragh Zeina district of Nouakchott and will include a chancery office building, U.S. Marine residence, warehouse, maintenance facilities, perimeter security, access pavilions, recreation facilities, and a utility building.
