Based on service quality outcomes, community outreach and other key indicators, the Top 100 are selected, and out of those after further in depth review the Top 10 hospitals.

Another SNAP Success Story

Jody Swearingen started Freedom Consulting, LLC in March 2011 to provide support to residents with developmental and physical disabilities. Freedom Consulting helps residents with disabilities find their stride When the company she was working for shut down, Jody Swearingen knew it would take a healthy helping of initiative to get back on track.

These days, Jody helps clients with disabilities find the motivation to succeed in their own respective employment searches. Jody worked with a community rehabilitation program for two years until she learned the business would be dissolving. Prior to that, she was a lead counselor for seven years with the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation, specializing in mental health cases.

One of the first calls Jody made after becoming unemployed was to Dave Heyamoto, business development manager with SNAP Financial Access. She had taken the agency's six-week micro-enterprise course years earlier and knew that Dave would be a good contact for advice and encouragement. It turns out she was right. Dave helped Jody qualify for the Self Assistance Employment Program (SEAP) which allows a person to receive unemployment benefits while they are starting a new business. He also made other recommendations, such as finding a good accountant and accessing help through the Small Business Association.

Jody launched Freedom Consulting, LLC in March 2011 with a pair of classes known as 'Work Strides' and 'Dependable Strengths.' Since then, the company has expanded to offer support in areas like job development and retention, community based assessments, independent living services, benefit planning and counseling. The programs are provided at no cost to clients. Freedom Consulting now has offices in Spokane, Tacoma, Wenatchee and Idaho with a total of 12 employees.

The company receives referrals through DVR and works with those who have physical or developmental disabilities. Jody said the work is all about "finding niches where people can be successful." The company hosts 10 to 14 classes a month with up to 20 people per class. Some clients also have criminal records.

Last June, Freedom Consulting earned the prestigious CARF International (Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities) status. Like SNAP, one of CARF International's basic values describes how 'all people have a right to be treated with dignity and respect.' With a Master's degree in counseling, Jody teaches what she calls 'motivational interviewing' centered around 'really listening to each client.'

"We want to get at what makes you special," she said. "We have quite a few people who come to our classes looking pretty defeated, but when they leave, they're ready to go. It's about preparing them not only for work, but for life in general."

To learn more about Freedom Consulting, contact Jody Swearingen at 509-209-0947 or Jody@FreedomConsultingLLC.com. To find out more about SNAP Financial Access programs like micro-enterprise lending/counseling, credit repair and Second Chance Banking, call 509-456-7106.
