Sister Cities Garden groundbreaking today

A 30-minute groundbreaking ceremony for the Spokane Sister Cities Garden was held at 12:15 pm today, in Riverfront Park, near the Howard Street Bridge. The location is north of the gondola loading station and south of the former YMCA Building.

The 'Connections' Sister Cities Garden is on the site of the former Japanese Pavilion at Expo '74. The garden on this site is an appropriate connection to Spokane's World's Fair. The garden will celebrate Spokane's 53-year history of involvement with the Sister Cities program and is designed to raise awareness about Spokane's international connections.

Design elements: Concrete pathways, colored blue and green to represent rivers, will lead to a small central plaza in the garden. Statuary from each of Spokane's Sister Cities will be featured, with signage noting the history of Spokane and its Sister Cities in education, cultural and business exchanges, among other programs. Select plantings, such as a Japanese cherry tree, will be included. Spokane has four Sister Cities: Nishinomiya, Japan (since 1961), Jilin City, China (1987), Limerick, Ireland (1990), and, Jecheon, South Korea (1999).

Invited to the groundbreaking May 5 are political, civic and business leaders, as well as leaders and members of Spokane's four Sister Cities. The community-funded project will cost about $250,000, plus the statuary representing Spokane and its four Sister Cities. Land Expressions of Spokane designed the project and is general contractor.

Tom Ourada's amazing floor designs win prestigious award

Tom Ourada owner of Ourada Designs in Nine Mile Falls has won the most prestigious award in the flooring industry from the National Wood Flooring Association, the Members Choice Flooring Award of the Year for 2014. Tom moved to the Spokane area (Nine Mile Falls) 7 years ago and started a hardwood flooring business. In the past few years he has been developing his version of Floor Art.

Tom started drawing when he was a young child. By the time he was a teenager, he was doing portraits of his friends and drawing whatever caught his eye and his interest, from cars to buildings to 3-D renderings and cutaways. In college at the University of Washington, some additional art and drawing classes helped him raise his skills and strengthened his trust in his personal vision.

His first custom floor was a solution to a problem of his own. He built his home and wanted a wood floor for the living room and entry. Disliking all of the off-the-shelf flooring he looked at, he began to consider the possibilities inherent in a three-ton log that he had. A friend owned a portable sawmill and he decided to mill the log into boards to create his flooring.

Tom's extensive knowledge of the various woods used and their interactions with a number of different stains, allows him to conform the materials in full support of the ultimate vision. You can see more of his designs and learn about the company at the website OuradaDesigns.com. The phone number is 509-389-8728 and the email is Tom@OuradaDesigns.com.
