In honor of KPBX FM's 35th Anniversary, NPR Senior Analyst Cokie Roberts speaks at The Bing Crosby Theater this Thursday, May 14 at 7:30pm. The best-selling author will talk about current affairs and her new book, 'Capital Dames,' exploring the lives of women in Washington DC during the Civil War. April 2015 marked 150 years since the Civil War ended.

Spokane's Ann Fennessy along and pianist Jody Graves will perform a couple songs from the Civil War Era. The evening is hosted by Verne Windham. Auntie's Bookstore will coordinate a book signing and sales of her new release. All proceeds benefit SPR. Tickets available through Ticketswest.com.


New Staff Members at the Northwest Museum of Arts & Culture

John Moredo-Burich is the new director of visitor experience at the MAC. He is a cultural anthropologist who previously held the positions of curator for exhibits and education at the University of North Carolina State Arboretum, director of exhibit development for The Franklin Institute Science Museum in Philadelphia, and director of exhibits for the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry.

Mandy Orozco is the MAC's new grant writer. She brings more than 13 years of experience as a fund development consultant to her role at the museum. Orozco specializes in increasing the impact and sustainability of large nonprofits and educational institutions. She previously worked with Rutgers University, Children's Aid & Family Services in New Jersey, and Jill's House in the D.C. Metro area.

Alison Highberger is the MAC's new media relations specialist. She is a freelance writer and publicist with more than 12 years of experience as a television producer in news, public affairs and entertainment programming. She has also been a congressional press secretary.


New Exhibit at the MAC

Past Forward: Contemporary Art from the Emirates opens this Saturday, May 16, featuring paintings, photographs, sculptures, and videos by noted artists in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Two of the exhibit's artists will be in Spokane. The public is invited to a panel discussion, 'Celebrating the Past in the Present: Telling Cultural Stories Through Art,' on Saturday, May 16 at 3:45 pm. Also on May 16, 11am-3pm, family fun at Passport to the Arts: Cultural Exchange with the Plateau and the UAE. Join the MAC for falconry, music, drumming, Plateau tribal dancers, and more.

Free Seminar on Understanding Chronic Heart Failure at Providence this Wednesday

Mended Hearts of Spokane and Dr. John Peterson of Providence Spokane Cardiology will hold a free seminar this Wednesday, May 13 from 6-7pm on 'Understanding and Managing Chronic Heart Failure'. The National Institutes of Health reports that 5.8 million Americans have heart failure.

Nearly 1 million Americans are hospitalized each year with chronic heart failure. Chronic heart failure is a serious health condition that requires medical treatment and lifestyle management so that it doesn't lead to life-threatening conditions.

Dr. Peterson will present important information on chronic heart failure including causes, symptoms, diagnosis and the best options for treatment and management of chronic heart failure. Spokane Advertisers Win Big at 2015 American Advertising Awards

The American Advertising Federation District XI announced the judging results for the American Advertising Awards which included a record 30 winners from the local AAF Spokane chapter. Winning entries included 17 professional entries from advertising agencies and marketing departments, along with 13 students at regional colleges and universities including Spokane Falls Community College, Eastern Washington University and North Idaho College. All District XI Gold and Silver ADDY Award winners are eligible to advance to the final, National judging round of the American Advertising Awards competition. National ADDY Award winners will be announced Saturday, June 13 at the American Advertising Awards Gala at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas.

Cheryl Strayed named Keynote Speaker at YWCA Women of Achievement Luncheon Oct.1

The YWCA of Spokane Announces Bestselling Author Cheryl Strayed as Guest Speaker for 2015 Women of Achievement Luncheon, to be held October 1 from 11:30am to 1:30pm at the Spokane Convention Center.

Strayed is author of #1 New York Times bestselling memoir 'Wild', which tells the amateur hiker's tale as she struggles to find inner peace during her 1,000-mile journey along the Pacific Crest Trail. Her story was featured as Oprah Winfrey's first selection for Oprah's Book Club 2.0, and inspired the 2014 release of the movie adaptation of 'Wild'.

For 33 years, YWCA of Spokane has celebrated high achieving women in the community at this annual luncheon. Established with the goal of increasing community awareness and appreciation for the diverse contributions of women leaders in Spokane, this luncheon has honored over 200 women in the region. All proceeds raised by this event directly benefit the YWCA's services for domestic violence victims and their children.

Women Helping Women Fund Annual Luncheon May 18 with Guest Speaker Amanda Lindhout

Women Helping Women Fund will host its 23rd annual luncheon on Monday, May 18 at the Spokane Convention Center. This year's featured speaker is kidnap survivor, author, and humanitarian, Amanda Lindhout. As Founder and Executive Director of The Global Enrichment Foundation (GEF), Lindhout has gained international acclaim for her work supporting development and aid in Somalia - the country where she once spent 460 days as a hostage. The Salvation Army of Spokane will kick off its 61st Annual National Salvation Army Week today, May 11, running through Sunday May 17. It's an opportunity to celebrate and recognize the Salvation Army's 150th worldwide anniversary.

May 11-15: Make a donation to their red kettle at the Milk Bottle restaurant on Garland from 11am-1pm.
Mon, May 11: Help feed our community by dropping off non-perishable food items.
Tues, May 12: Support Sally's House, the only foster care receiving facility of its kind in Washington state, by dropping off new clothes or games for children ages 2-12.
