SCC offers Certificate in Effective Business Writing

Forbes, The Washington Post, Fast Company, and more report that skill in business writing is instrumental to success on the job, and this skill becomes even more (not less!) important as more and more communication is done via the Web. In response to calls by business for help improving writing skills of employees, Spokane Community College's Business Technology Department is offering a stand-alone 15-credit certificate in Effective Business Writing designed especially for working professionals.

Grammar and mechanics are still important. Errors reduce your credibility and your potential for success. This certificate will build on essential writing skills in grammar, mechanics, and style to create effective messages both on- and off-line. Messages covered will range from traditional letters and memos to e-mails, blogs, micro-blogs, websites, online forms, and online collaborative forums as well as formal proposals and reports.

Courses required are Business Correspondence (BT 272), Business Research and Business Reports (BT 273), and Business Writing for the Web (BT 274). The last course, Business Writing for the Web is a new course developed at SCC, offered for the first time this winter. It particularly addresses the different strategies and styles leading to successful business conversations on the Web.
