EWU creates new Health Science College

As it seeks to meet the growing market demand in the critical field of health care, Eastern Washington University announces the creation of the new College of Health Science & Public Health. The Board of Trustees has unanimously approved the creation of the new college.

Set to open in fall 2014, and based at EWU Spokane on the Riverpoint Campus, this significant academic initiative will bolster the university's role as an economic driver in this diverse industry around the greater Spokane region.

"Eastern Washington University has a long tradition of excellence in the health sciences in downtown Spokane," said EWU President Rodolfo Arevalo. "This new college will elevate our current programs, initiate research in critical health arenas, promote the development of additional health-related fields of study and expand degree options."

The College of Health Science & Public Health will be comprised of many of the university's existing nationally-accredited programs, led by respected faculty. These programs include Communication Disorders, Dental Hygiene, the doctorate in Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, the new Master of Public Health, the Health Services Administration certificate and the Regional Initiatives in Dental Education program, or RIDE.

These programs are currently part of the College of Science, Health and Engineering (which will be renamed) and the College of Business and Public Administration.

Additionally, the college of Health Science & Public Health will become the center point for Eastern's development of expanded partnerships with the University of Washington School Of Dentistry, the health-related programs of the Community Colleges of Spokane and the development of public school partnerships with magnet schools related to health professions. In addition, the College of Health Science and Public Health will continue to expand the university's international partnerships with Universidad Juan N. Corpas in Bogota, Colombia and the Universidad De Iberoamerica, in Costa Rica, both private medical schools in South America. Arevalo believes that the development of these international partnerships will help define and expand the health mission of the college and university.

In the coming months, the university will develop the organizational structure of the new college and hire a dean who will work with university leadership to develop a vision for the continued expansion of our existing degree programs, innovative ideas on health prevention and new approaches to health care delivery.
