Joel McCullough, M.D., joins Providence Health Care

Dr. McCullough, who has served as health officer for the Spokane Regional Health District (SRHD) since 2009, will assume the role as PHC Medical Director for Community Health and Epidemiology beginning February 22. In his new role, Dr. McCullough will lead efforts to make sustainable improvements in the overall health of the communities Providence serves.

Dr. McCullough will have oversight for epidemiology at PHC hospitals and medical clinics, including Sacred Heart Medical Center & Children's Hospital and Holy Family Hospital in Spokane, and Mount Carmel Hospital and St. Joseph's Hospital in Stevens County, and Providence Medical Group clinics throughout eastern Washington.

He will also oversee development of the special pathogens unit at Sacred Heart Medical Center & Children's Hospital in collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Washington State Department of Health. In 2015, the hospital was selected by the U.S Department of Health & Human Services as one of nine Ebola and special pathogen treatment centers across the United States, and was awarded a five year federal grant to develop the unit.

Dr. McCullough is board certified in internal medicine, preventive medicine, and in occupational and environmental medicine. He has a Master of Public Health and Master of Science in Preventive Medicine, and has worked in public health and occupational and environmental epidemiology for more than 20 years, including serving as a medical epidemiologist with the CDC.
