Community Colleges of Spokane Wins College Spark Grant

— Community Colleges of Spokane was recently awarded a $149,991 grant from College Spark Washington to partner with five rural school districts in eastern Washington to improve college and career readiness for high school students.

Over the life of the three-year grant, faculty will collaborate with high school teachers and counselors in the Eastern Washington Rural Alliance Partnership (Mary Walker, Reardan-Edwall, Riverside, Grand Coulee Dam and Colville) to identify gaps in career and college readiness based on academic outcomes and college readiness metrics. Working together, the educators will develop new or enhance current student learning approaches that address academic barriers in math and English as well as other student success indicators like study skills, mindset, persistence and time management.

CCS was one of 10 grants awarded in the state. The annual, competitive statewide Community Grants Program focuses on building the effectiveness of grantees working with low-income students in middle school, high school and college by funding new and promising practices that help students become college-ready and transition successfully to college.
